Clyde J. Wingfield, Ph.D (March 13, 1931 – Spetember 15, 2011)


Clyde J. Wingfield, Ph.D, passed away on September 15, 2011 at his home in University Park, TX. He was born on March 13, 1931 to Chesse Thelma and Clyde Wesley Wingifield of Curitis, AR. He is survived by his wife Dr. Jiang Lan-Wingfield (JoAnn) of Dallas, TX; son Wesley Hughes Wingfield and wife Laura Ross Wingfield of Kansas City, MO; daughter Stephanie Jill Halpern and husband Marty Halpern of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; stepson Stuart Su of Dallas, TX, and grandchildren Chandler Halpern and Grace Halpern of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.


Wingfield earned a Ph.D. in Publica Adminstration in the Maxwell School in Syracuse University, NY. He served in the United States Air Force as an intelligent officer during the Korean War. He was a professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Texas Tech., Penn. State University, and Northern Illinois University. He held several higher education administrative positions that included Executive VP, University of Texas, El Paso; Eugene McElvaney Chair of Public Administration, Southern Methodist University; President, Baruch College, CUNY; Executive VP and Provost, University of Miami; President, College at Old Westbury, SUNY; and President, Northern Illinois University.


He was an avid reader and tennis player, but his greatest passion was flying as a private pilot.


A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2:00pm, in Room 138 of the Annette Caldwell Simmons Hall (3101 University Blvd., Dallas, TX 75275), SMU. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that the donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association,
